A Study on the Growth and Flowering of Saintpaulia ionantha under Controlled Light Intensities

Abstract
A study of the proper light intensity in growth Monique, Robert O, Julienne and Local (unidentified) of Saintpaulia ionantha were grown under six levels of light intensity; 1.25, 3.75, 6.25, 12.50 and 75.00 percentage of full sunlight.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
I. Flowering percentage was very poor under light intensity of 1.25%, they were not Hovered even under tight intensity of 75.00% and flowered more than 94.5% under the range of light intensities between 3.75% ion and 25.00%.
2. There were two groups according to the light intensities for dowering days, one was generally shorten under the range of light intensities between 6.25% and 12.50%, the other was shorten under the range of light intensities between 3.75% and 6.25%.
3. Within the range of light intensities between 6.25% and 12.50%, peduncle numbers, floret numbers per peduncle, flower diameter and petiole angle were increased. They showed proper sizes in peduncle length, petiole length, and leaf area. And also showed increased photosynthesis under the same light intensities. Therefore, it is believed that ornamental value was high.
4. From the above results, saintpaulia produced the bast responses of both growth and ornamental value when they were grown under the range of light intensities between 6.25% and 12.50%, i.e. between 5,000lux and 10,000lux. The author believed that limit light intensities for saintpaulia was minimum 25.00%(20.000lux).
